Music lovers who are in Milan from 20th to 22nd May are in for a treat as Piano City Milano 2016 takes place. Fifty hours of free piano concerts will take place at locations across the city in 400 concerts that will not even stop for the Friday and Saturday nights. To take in as many of these concerts as possible, you will need to travel between venues. The easiest way to do that is on Milan’s extensive public transport network. Save money by buying a MilanoCard to travel for free on buses, trams, metro and city trains.
Where are the concerts?
The different venues of the concerts are numerous and varied. Some are indoors and some are in the open air. Some even take place on the move! Stations, parks, piazzas, bars and attractions are all places where you may hear live piano music that weekend. Many are in places that are of interest to visit in their own right, and may be visited at a discount with your Milan City Pass.
The opening takes place at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna at Villa Reale, where British pianist Michael Nyman will play music specially composed for Piano City. GAM is one of Milan’s municipal museums that you can visit at a discount with your City Pass.
A concert at dawn
A very special concert takes place on the Saturday at 5.30am on the Highline Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Getting up so early may be hard, but the combination of the dawn views over Milan and the live music of Gabriele Pezzoli will prove to be unforgettable.
On the move
Piano concerts will take place on a boat in the Navigli District, on a tram driving across the city centre, and even on a bicycle in the Indro Montanelli Gardens, bringing a great sense of fun to this wonderful weekend of music in Milan.
